The Hydrogen ProtoHub, a collaborative research facility co-operated by The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Electromechanics (UT-CEM) and GTI Energy, has been awarded the 2026 Robert Zalosh Hydrogen Safety Excellence Award by the Center for Hydrogen Safety. In February 2026, UT-CEM's Director Michael Lewis attended the 2026 Center for Hydrogen Safety European Conference in Athens, Greece to accept the award on behalf of the UT-CEM and GTI Energy research team.
The Center for Hydrogen Safety is a global non-profit community dedicated to promoting hydrogen safety and best practices worldwide. Being recognized on this global platform for outstanding contributions to hydrogen safety is truly an honor. For the Hydrogen ProtoHub research team, safety is at the forefront of this fully integrated environment where hydrogen production, storage, and end use technologies can be safely tested, validated, and demonstrated. Any advancements or innovations from the Hydrogen ProtoHub would not be possible without making safety a priority. This is especially true in a university environment where students are getting hands-on access to hydrogen technologies and trust that the professional research staff are providing a safe environment for their work and studies.
This award would not be possible without the support of our project partners, including GTI Energy and Frontier Energy, Inc., along with our numerous industry sponsors.

A special thank you to the staff of UT-CEM. Without the talented team of researchers, technicians, and administrators, the Hydrogen ProtoHub would not be the success it is today.
